Where Does the Best Organic Coffee Come From?
Coffee can be more than a morning ritual; it’s an opportunity to support farmers and the environment. Organic brews offer this chance, by choosing beans grown without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides and choosing fair trade beans as opposed to petroleum-based fertilizers. But how can you choose the ideal organic coffee brew?
As much as there are numerous factors to take into account when searching for organic coffees, my main priorities include sourcing, third-party testing and exceptional flavor. So over the past several months I have spent time visiting specialty shops, coffee subscription services and supermarket shelves searching for organic brews that meet these criteria.
A list of five excellent organic coffees was compiled that not only meet ethical and sustainability criteria, but will also deliver an incredible cup of Joe.
Coffee consumers tend to trust big-name brands when it comes to quality. However, organic-focused boutique companies can also deliver delicious organic brews – an example being DOMA Coffee Co in Idaho which works with small organic growers to source its beans while using an eco-friendly roaster which saves 80 percent in natural gas compared to conventional models and giving back through non-profit organizations and charities in its local area.
Cafe Mam is an exceptional, family-owned roaster which sources its beans from cooperatives of Mayan farmers in Chiapas, Mexico. As part of its support of producers, Cafe Mam is certified organic and Fair Trade; their dark, full-bodied blend features rich chocolate tones balanced by subtle spice tones.
Lifeboost Coffee stands out as certified organic and Fair Trade coffee grown at high elevations under native trees’ shade, slowing its growth for more flavorful cups of brew. Furthermore, no pesticides or herbicides were used during its cultivation process, while it was packaged using environmentally-friendly processes for roasting and packaging.
While all these coffees are certified organic, there are other considerations when selecting your next bag of organic brew. Not all organic products are Fair Trade certified; some may carry its logo without actually meeting its standards of minimum pricing, worker wages and workplace protections. By prioritizing certifications, ethical sourcing and third-party testing, I believe you can select an organic beverage that won’t only taste delicious but will stand out in the marketplace as well.
