What’s a Healthy Amount of Coffee Per Day?
Coffee lovers and tea enthusiasts may be encouraged to drink moderate amounts of their favourite drinks in moderation; according to research published in BMJ journal, over 1,000 compounds found in coffee beans possess anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties; plus drinking coffee may help prevent some forms of heart rhythm problems like atrial fibrillation.
Iluyomade recommends two to three cups per day as an ideal amount, which will maximize its benefits while minimizing side effects like anxiety, restlessness and digestive discomfort. However, excessive caffeine consumption may still cause these side effects in sensitive individuals or those consuming excessively over a prolonged period.
If you are an avid coffee drinker, be mindful that over time your body does develop a tolerance to caffeine; the maximum safe amount per day (including caffeine found in tea, soda and some chocolate products) is 400 milligrams; exceeding this amount may cause headaches, nausea and fatigue.
Consuming too much caffeine may increase blood pressure and heart rate; however, most healthy adults can enjoy one cup of coffee (or tea) per day without experiencing adverse side effects.
Caffeine consumption should not be taken too far as too much caffeine can interfere with sleep and cause insomnia and irritability; however, its release from coffee and tea sources is slower than from energy drinks or colas and therefore consumption should be done so in moderation.
Pregnant women must exercise caution when drinking coffee or other caffeinated beverages while pregnant as this could pass through the placenta and reach their fetus, according to research studies which link high caffeine intake during gestation to increased risks of miscarriage, stillbirth and low birth weight outcomes.
Coffee, tea and green and black iced tea all contain around 98% water and will not dehydrate you if consumed moderately. Sugary drinks should also be avoided as these could contribute to weight gain and type 2 diabetes.
Coffee and other caffeinated beverages should also be avoided during the last trimester of pregnancy as caffeine can increase contractions and even cause miscarriage. Furthermore, its acidity levels could cause irritation to an already sensitive pregnant stomach and lead to digestive issues if consumed too frequently – for your own wellbeing and that of your unborn baby, please consult a physician.
