Mushroom Coffee Alternatives
Mushroom coffees are created using ground or instant mushroom extracts mixed with ingredients like coconut milk powder, stevia or cacao for an earthy, savory taste that closely resembles that of regular coffee. They look, brew and taste just like traditional coffee but feature distinct earthy characteristics when brewed and consumed.
Shroomi and Laird Superfood Perform are two products offering functional mushrooms such as Lion’s Mane for focus and mental clarity, and Chaga for immune support. Meanwhile, other brands like MUDWTR, Atlas+ and Everyday Dose contain adaptogenic herbs and spices designed to reduce stress while improving gut health.
Adaptogens
Adaptogens are nontoxic herbal plants believed to increase resistance against biological, chemical and physical stressors. Used extensively in Chinese and Indian Ayurveda medicine for centuries to enhance health, increase longevity and strengthen immunity; in addition, Adaptogens have also been proven to promote mental clarity and increase focus.
Many mushroom coffees combine traditional coffee with functional mushrooms and adaptogenic herbs for an energy boost that’s both natural and healthful, without the caffeine jitters. This results in a beverage offering cognitive benefits from Lion’s Mane, Chaga and Reishi mushrooms with other herbal additions like L-theanine, turmeric and cacao for enhanced focus, stress relief and immune support.
One of the advantages of mushroom coffee alternatives is their organic ingredients and reduced caffeine content, while also being available in multiple flavors that appeal to different people – vanilla, chocolate and even chai and matcha are among them!
Mushroom coffees generally contain less than one teaspoon of caffeine per serving and some don’t even contain any. Many brands, like DIRTEA Coffee, provide functional mushroom blends designed to meet specific wellness goals from increasing focus and mental clarity to supporting immunity.
DIRTEA Coffee’s blends are expertly crafted using premium-quality ingredients for an indescribably satisfying and refreshing experience. Their recipes combine ethically-sourced mushrooms with other functional herbs like ashwagandha, tulsi and rhodiola root that have long been revered for their stress-relief, anti-aging, immunity supporting and energy boosting benefits – these herbs and spices boasting impressive stress relieving, immune supporting and energy-enhancing capabilities.
Before trying a mushroom coffee alternative, always consult with your doctor first to ensure it’s suitable for you. Some supplements can interact with certain medications negatively while some herbs can influence hormones and cause side effects. Be sure to look out for United States Pharmacopeia/Good Manufacturing Practice seals on any supplements being considered for consumption and avoid taking too many adaptogens – too much can actually have the opposite effect of being beneficial!
Lion’s Mane
Lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus) mushrooms have long been recognized for their health-giving benefits on brain function. Research indicates they can stimulate nerve growth and promote mental clarity. Their fruiting body and mycelia contain bioactive compounds called hericenones and erinacines which reduce nervous system inflammation while simultaneously crossing blood-brain barriers in rodents to encourage new neuron connections, leading to improved nerve growth.
Mushroom coffee is a blend of traditional coffee with medicinal mushrooms known for their adaptogenic properties, such as chaga, lion’s mane, reishi and cordyceps which may boost energy levels while improving focus and mood. Some versions also include ashwagandha which has been shown to boost energy while improving sleep quality.
mushroom coffee has quickly become the beverage of choice among individuals seeking improved physical and mental wellbeing. Compared to regular coffee, the adaptogenic mushroom extracts present in mushroom coffee may provide a safe energy boost without the jitters associated with traditional caffeine drinks – as well as help alleviate stress. Mushrooms may even help combat chronic conditions like high triglycerides, diabetes, low immunity levels or weak nerve strength.
mushroom coffee typically contains less caffeine than traditional brews, making them suitable for individuals sensitive to stimulants as well as those looking to reduce stress or improve sleep quality. Mushroom coffee may also help those experiencing digestive discomfort avoid bloating or stomach upset as its ingredients tend not to cause such reactions.
Although more clinical studies are necessary to ascertain its long-term benefits, lion’s mane is commonly used as a supplement to treat anxiety and depression due to its ability to balance hormones that influence mood. Furthermore, it may help alleviate some forms of neurological conditions including Alzheimer’s.
Note that dietary supplements are not subject to FDA oversight in the same manner as prescription medicines; thus some dietary supplements may contain substances which could be unsafe or interfere with certain medications. It is therefore essential that when purchasing dietary supplements from any source they be checked carefully with third-party certification bodies like National Sanitation Foundation, United States Pharmacopeia or ConsumerLab before purchasing.
Chaga
One of the most sought-after mushroom coffee alternatives is Chaga. This charcoal-like fungus, found on birch trees in northern climates and held highly by indigenous peoples from Russia, China, and other northern, boreal cultures for centuries has long been respected.
As well as its anti-aging benefits, chaga mushroom is widely known for stimulating and regulating immune system function. A study published in Scientific Reports indicated that its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties could support white blood cells — the body’s first line of defense against bacteria and viruses–by protecting white blood cell activity.
Coffee fans may welcome the change to mushroom-infused drinks as an exciting challenge to their daily routines, yet some may feel intimidated by making such a dramatic alteration to their routine. Luckily, most mushroom coffees on the market do not contain more caffeine than traditional coffee; caffeine levels vary among products – for instance Rasa Adaptogenic Mushroom Coffee and vegan Shroomi are caffeine-free while Joe’y, Ryze, and Atlas+ coffee contain around 50 milligrams per cup.
Just like regular coffee, mushroom-infused drinks typically taste similar to their caffeine-containing counterparts; some varieties may even have sweeter and less bitter profiles depending on which mushrooms and ingredients have been added – for instance Om Mushroom offers a Mushroom Coffee Latte Blend that contains lion’s mane, cordyceps and reishi extracts blended with organic arabica beans for optimal enjoyment hot or cold!
Though research on mushroom-infused coffee remains in its infancy, many consumers have reported its positive health-enhancing benefits for both mind and body. To experience its health-promoting properties firsthand, try it for yourself! Many mushroom-infused beverages available today feature added ingredients like L-theanine for relaxation purposes, ashwagandha for mood support and cacao for antioxidant support, helping create an equally enjoyable drink suitable for most palates.
Reishi
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) has long been revered as the “Mushroom of Immortality,” with centuries-old medicinal uses and cultural fascination surrounding this amazing mushroom. Reishi is said to improve immunity while increasing energy levels and has even been used as treatment for fatigue, stress insomnia blood pressure diabetes high cholesterol/triglycerides/inflammatory disorders etc.
Reishi is an adaptogen with strong anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory properties, helping to balance your endocrine system while treating chronic fatigue syndrome and other signs of aging. Reishi also contains polysaccharides and triterpenes with antioxidant activity which may help reduce inflammation while inhibiting tumor growth.
Reishi mushroom may not be cancerous; however, its use should only be for short-term health benefits due to potential side effects including stomach upset and liver damage. Before including Reishi into your diet plan or taking any other supplement(s), always speak with a healthcare provider first as this supplement could affect pre-existing conditions and medications you take.
Most of the mushroom coffees we tested fit into two distinct categories: ground-based beverages that could be brewed like traditional coffee and mixed with other ingredients; and instant mushroom powder mixes. Joe’y, Ryze, Four Sigmatic Focus and Laird Superfood Perform are ground-based alternatives; while Atlas+ Latte Superblend and Everyday Dose mix offer powdered options; some of these powdered varieties included additional functional ingredients like L-theanine to reduce caffeine’s jitteriness as well as ashwagandha to support mood support.
All the mushroom coffees we tested contained some amount of caffeine, with Joe’y having the most at 50 milligrams per serving and our winning mix having 10 milligrams from cacao. Although these amounts of caffeine may be lower than what is typically found in regular cups of coffee, they should still be considered when considering existing health conditions or those sensitive to stimulants.
Overall, we found mushroom coffees delicious and an easy way to incorporate more mushrooms into our daily lives. As always, however, we recommend speaking to your doctor prior to beginning any supplement, as the effects and safety of different brands vary widely.
