When it comes to increasing our energy, many of us turn to coffee or tea for an energy boost. Both offer plenty of health benefits; however, there has been much discussion regarding which drink is superior. So we sought advice from registered dietitians on their opinion.

Green tea provides more antioxidants than black tea, yet is far less caffeine-heavy, making it the better option for people with caffeine sensitivity, according to registered dietitian Felicia Stoler, DCN, CLT, RDN. She further noted that drinking green tea may also lower your risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Tea usually contains between 30 to 45 milligrams of caffeine per cup, compared with one 8-ounce serving of coffee’s 96 milligrams. Green tea can provide those looking for just a subtle buzz a lower amount of caffeine; however, too much caffeine consumption may trigger jitters, anxiety and difficulty sleeping if consumed regularly, according to Green.

Coffee may contain too many empty calories; tea on the other hand has naturally low caloric intake. As reported by CNET, research indicates that drinking tea regularly may help people burn fat more effectively and lose more weight than those who did not regularly partake. One such study concluded that participants who regularly consumed green tea experienced greater weight loss.

Tea can also provide an excellent source of vitamin D, an essential nutrient for supporting bone health, mood enhancement and immune boosting. “One cup of tea could provide up to 50% of your daily recommended amount,” according to Stoler.

Green tea can be an excellent solution for those living with heart disease as it has the ability to decrease the risk of clot-forming plaque in arteries, one of the main contributors to heart attacks and strokes, according to Moore. Furthermore, drinking green tea regularly may improve cholesterol and triglyceride levels while simultaneously reducing high blood pressure, she explains.
