Is Greek Coffee Healthier?
Greek islands are home to some of the longest-lived people on the planet, and many factors contribute to their remarkable longevity – among them drinking Greek coffee regularly may be one. According to clinical research, those who drink traditional style Greek coffee might be less at risk from common health conditions than others who don’t.
This could be due to its healthier composition than instant beverages such as frappes, cappuccinos and filter coffees. Ibrik beans are roasted at lower temperatures and for shorter amounts of time than traditional coffee varieties before being stirred until thick froth (kaimaki) forms, creating a satisfying full-bodied coffee experience with many healthful benefits.
Greek coffee, traditionally prepared at home in an ibrik pot known as a briki, is typically enjoyed while socializing or relaxing, typically taken slowly over several minutes to allow the grounds to settle at the bottom of each cup and avoid bitter taste that some might find distasteful.
Modern Greek coffee has become an international favorite at restaurants and cafes worldwide. Enjoyed either on its own, or as part of more complex concoctions such as frappe or cappuccino drinks, Greek coffee remains an integral part of most Greeks’ daily diets.
Although Greeks consume many different instant coffee varieties, including espresso freddo and my generation’s favorite frappe, ibrik remains their go-to drink – and for good reason: its antioxidant and healthful chemical components help defend against heart disease, diabetes and dementia.
Polyphenols found in coffee are well-known to help improve cardiovascular function and lower risk for heart disease, while its caffeine levels compare well to those found in instant coffees.
A double shot of Ibrik is loaded with protein, which can help build muscles. Furthermore, its potassium content helps regulate blood pressure and electrolyte levels in your body.
For an uplifting boost, coffee shops offer the ideal place. Choose between traditional kafeneia with older male regulars or modern cafes that cater more towards family fun – many are independently-run so be sure to support these independently-owned establishments!
