Is Coffee Haram Or Halal?
Coffee enthusiasts know all too well what coffee consists of and its health benefits, yet many may be unaware that it was once illegal under Islamic law. Coffee was banned during the 15th and 16th centuries due to an Ottoman Sultan who believed drinking it contributed to social decay and discord in Istanbul; therefore he issued a fatwa (or decree) against it with any violator punished to death.
Muslim scholars reviewing this issue fortunately concluded that no evidence supported this claim and there are no prohibitions against coffee in either Koran or Sunnah. Coffee is made from the roasted and ground seeds from coffee plants such as arabica and robusta, two tropical evergreen shrubs with 25 or more species which produce most of the world’s coffee beans containing caffeine – a mild stimulant with various health benefits including improving concentration as well as combatting obesity and diabetes.
Studies have also shown coffee to boost metabolism and decrease cancer risks, among other benefits. But while drinking coffee may provide these health advantages, it must still be remembered as a source of calories and caffeine can have negative repercussions for health if consumed too frequently.
Coffee’s story is fascinating. Legend holds that Kaldi, a goatherd in Arabia, noticed his herd acting strangely after eating coffee berries; after tasting one for himself he experienced exhilaration at drinking it himself and spread its popularity quickly throughout Arabia and eventually Europe by the 17th century where it quickly became mainstream.
Though most Muslims now enjoy coffee, its acceptance wasn’t always so. Coffee was once forbidden by Islam because its consumption could lead to similar intoxicating effects as alcohol; however, after further consideration by Muslim scholars it was determined that its consumption is nonintoxicating and there are no restrictions against its consumption imposed by Islamic law.
Today, coffee remains one of the world’s favorite beverages and enjoyed by millions. If you are a practicing Muslim, be mindful to consider all issues discussed here before making your decision on coffee consumption. For best results, consult with a cleric to get their advice before making decisions regarding diet – but always remember to practice taqiyyah (good manners) while enjoying your cup!
