How to Make Mushroom Tea Lights
This DIY project, shared on Reddit r/mushrooms, has become quite popular. A simple and fun way to add some magical flare to any tea light! First we will create the mushroom base by hot gluing two large green felt circles together; next, we will glue on a small brown doorway.
Materials
As an optional step, stitch a doorway on the stalk of your mushroom using red thread. It can be as elaborate or simple as you desire, adding a pom pom doorknob for extra cuteness and realism! Finally, create the base for your mushroom by hot gluing together multiple green felt circles – this will provide an area to place a tealight candle while providing additional support and stability – hot glueing multiple felt circles together can also act as an excellent support mechanism; alternatively you could also use cardboard toilet paper rolls instead – either option will do.
Techniques
Use the stem as a guide and form the mushroom cap from clay by rolling it with your hands into a large, round ball. Be sure that it can accommodate a basic tealight candle without becoming too thin for its needs, then shape so it forms an umbrella-shape from all angles using a brush. Smooth any cracks or imperfections with additional smoothing brush strokes as necessary.
Next, craft the stalk of your mushroom using cardboard from an old toilet paper roll and hot glue a small green circle to its base for stability. This will give your stalk an area in which to house both tealight and mushroom.
