Social media may have exposed you to an emerging trend: mushroom-infused drinks appear like coffee. Proponents of this fad claim it can boost focus, manage stress levels and support a healthy gut flora.

Mushrooms have long been used as adaptogens, or substances which strengthen your body’s response to stress, to relieve anxiety and depression. Though research into mushrooms is promising, not enough proof exists to support many of the claims made about mushroom coffee makers.

Although data about these products are scarce, many companies are jumping onto the mushroom-coffee bandwagon with mushroom-infused drinks that mimic your regular cup of joe. While most are relatively affordable compared to their coffee equivalent, some cost double or more. So is this trend worth your while?

We contacted several mushroom coffee brands in order to establish how much caffeine there was in their product and whether or not the price tag justified its purchase. Most brands provided about 48 milligrams per serving; differences arose depending on type of mushroom blend used (MUD/WTR, Om Mushroom Superfood and Pure Shrooms tended to contain less caffeine).

These latter variants often incorporate ingredients like cinnamon, nutmeg and coconut which help mask the earthy taste of mushrooms for an experience closer to traditional coffee in terms of taste.

What sets RYZE’s mushroom coffee apart is its use of chaga and lion’s mane mushrooms, which have been proven to provide energy, clarity and an increased sense of calm; bovine collagen, L-theanine (an amino acid believed to improve focus and sleep quality); as well as an extended return policy of 120 days that allows customers to choose store credit instead of receiving cash refunds.

As for other health benefits, RYZE states their blend can promote a healthy immune system, improved mood and digestive balance as well as reduce fatigue. They do advise however that there’s no scientific backing behind these claims and caution those with autoimmune conditions and pregnant or breastfeeding women as it contains active compounds found in mushrooms which could interfere with certain medications as well as worsen conditions further. Those sensitive to caffeine should avoid mushroom-infused coffee beverages altogether as these might interact with regular coffee in an unexpected way.
