How Many Cups of Coffee a Day Healthy?
Coffee is an integral part of morning routine for many, but how much coffee should be safely and healthily consumed each day? Although it is important to learn proper consumption techniques for coffee consumption, each individual’s health plays a part in how many cups per day are healthy for consumption.
The American Heart Association states that coffee can improve mental health and decrease your risk for heart disease, but only if consumed in moderation. According to FDA recommendations, most adults can safely consume 400 milligrams of caffeine daily which is roughly equivalent to four 8-ounce cups of brewed coffee or two sodas; pregnant and high blood pressure women should avoid it completely.
One study discovered that drinking one cup of coffee daily decreased your risk of Type 2 diabetes by 7%. Other research has linked coffee with reduced risks of liver cirrhosis and Parkinson’s disease as well as heart disease prevention thanks to its antioxidants which may lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Another study, conducted and published in 2022 by Epidemiology and Prevention journal, demonstrated that those who consumed three to five cups of coffee each day experienced lower risks of cardiovascular disease death compared to those who did not drink any at all. Furthermore, drinking coffee first thing in the morning may further lower risks associated with heart-related deaths.
However, if you are at an increased risk for cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure, it’s wiser to limit yourself to two or three cups daily as suggested in the research study due to possible adverse side effects from too much caffeine intake.
Care should also be taken when choosing your coffee variety, as choosing the beans used can have a large effect on its health-promoting compounds and how they’re extracted. Organic, single-origin coffee from high altitudes tends to grow without pesticide use and extract more polyphenols when ground finely for brewing.
As previously discussed, it’s also essential that any coffee consumed be made using only unsweetened black coffee brewed at home with filtered water rather than tap. Doing this allows you to control how much sugar and fat enters your cup as well as help avoid stomach upsets caused by dairy- or sugar-containing coffee drinks. On average, two to three cups per day should be enough. If pregnant or otherwise ill health complications exist then two or three unsweetened black cups could be suitable daily – provided it does not add excess calories. Finally remember when drinking your coffee that always accompany it with food or snacks to help avoid stomach upsets caused by drinking alone!
