This study sought to systematically assess the nutritional and therapeutic effects of G. lucidum through a rigorous systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of RCTs, as well as provide an assessment of its strength using GRADE framework.

An exhaustive electronic database search was performed, searching for studies which directly compared G. lucidum supplements with placebo, reporting health-related outcomes. Search strategies were tailored specifically for each database and included essential terms like “Ganoderma lucidum,” “lingzhi,” and “reishi.” Bibliographies of identified articles were manually searched for additional references.

Results from 17 RCTs have revealed that high-dose supplements of G. lucidum significantly enhanced BMI, total cholesterol (TC), creatinine, and GPx levels among participants, while decreasing creatinine and GPx. No significant changes were seen for DBP, SBP, fasting glucose levels, HDL-C levels, LDL-C levels, TG levels or ALT. Subgroup analysis by age revealed that supplements were more successful at improving BMI and TC levels among younger individuals than in older ones.
