Which is Healthier Regular Coffee Or Decaf?
Coffee consumption appears to have numerous health advantages. Decaf may be especially beneficial if caffeine affects your heart or blood pressure negatively or you suffer from stomach issues; but regular may still offer several advantages.
Caffeine is a stimulant that raises your heart rate, increases blood pressure and interferes with sleep, as well as cause anxiety, nervousness, stomach upset and jitteriness in some individuals. Decaf coffee uses the same beans as caffeinated varieties but most of its caffeine has been removed by soaking them in solvents before roasting – leaving only 2-15 mg remaining per cup!
Studies have linked decaf coffee with lower risks of certain conditions and extended longevity, similar to caffeinated coffee. Research has also demonstrated how it may reduce Type 2 diabetes and certain cancer risk; however, in a new study comparing decaf and regular coffee results were less conclusive.
The research team utilized data from the UK Biobank study, tracking over 450,000 adults between the ages of 40 to 69 regarding diet, lifestyle and medical history. Researchers then compared those who regularly consumed two to three cups of coffee daily — be it decaffeinated or caffeinated, ground or instant — with those who did not drink coffee at all; decaf or caffeinated varieties had lower risks of cardiovascular disease and longer lives than those who consumed their coffee without cream and without sugar in it.
Although a recent study indicates both caffeinated and decaf coffee can provide benefits, it’s difficult to quantify their specific impacts due to all their different components. One such compound that may help prevent MetS includes chlorogenic acid – present both caffeinated and decaf — may help with cardiovascular risk reduction such as high blood pressure, obesity and insulin resistance.
