No matter your preference, both coffee and matcha offer numerous health benefits, but which is healthier – coffee or matcha? While they both share many similarities between themselves, it is crucial that one understands their respective distinctions; from flavor profiles, nutritional content and health benefits.

Matcha tea is made from the camellia sinensis green tea plant and grown under shade conditions to achieve its signature jade green hue and increased nutritional content. Additionally, this special growing process boosts L-theanine levels – an amino acid known to calm your mind without creating caffeine jitters – enabling better focus and relaxation without experiencing caffeine jitters as with coffee or similar beverages. Furthermore, decreased cortisol levels help balance blood sugar and support healthy sleep patterns.

Both coffee and matcha contain antimicrobial properties as well as the potential to reduce inflammation, boost metabolism, support mood, aid weight loss and provide antioxidant protection from free radicals – helping cardiovascular health as a result. Coffee has been studied more in-depth; guidelines suggest three to four cups a day as an optimal consumption amount; however excessive caffeine can lead to nervousness or insomnia while high levels can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Although both drinks may provide similar health benefits, at Kroma Wellness we prefer matcha to coffee as research shows it to be superior at aiding weight loss, healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels, brain function enhancement and overall wellness promotion. Plus, matcha is less acidic!

Matcha may offer many advantages over coffee, but it is important to be mindful of any potential interference with iron absorption if consumed in large amounts. As such, mealtime consumption should be limited for this reason and milk or sugar should not be added since these can compromise any potential health benefits of either beverage.
