While many have reported feeling the benefits of mushroom coffee, scientific evidence is limited. While some studies have demonstrated the link between adaptogens found in some mushroom blends and enhanced mental performance, other have not. Still, many coffee fans are willing to switch their usual cup of joe for this functional blend of mushroom extracts and premium coffee beans that promises increased immunity, focus, and digestion.

As this trend expands, more brands are entering the space with specialty blends tailored specifically towards specific health goals. Beyond traditional mushroom ingredients like L-theanine for caffeine jitters relief or ashwagandha for mood support, consumers looking for mushroom coffee should pay careful attention to ingredient lists and costs per serving when searching for their ideal product – higher priced items don’t always translate to greater mushroom dosage or higher-grade beans – some budget options I tried contain just as many mushrooms!

My initial batch of mushroom coffee tests fell into either ground or instant categories and were designed to be brewed like traditional coffee. Shroomi, Four Sigmatic’s Focus and Laird Superfood Perform contained ground coffee mixed with extracts of lion’s mane, chaga and reishi mushrooms – like Shroomi from Shroomi to Four Sigmatic’s Focus to Laird Superfood Perform – along with flavor profiles similar to traditional coffee with subtle mushroom accents from Atlas+ Coffee Superblend and Everday Dose’s instant Mug all performed equally well; instant powders dissolving easily into hot water with flavors similar to conventional coffee but with subtle mushroom notes that mimicked traditional flavors along the same vein as traditional coffee, including their flavor profiles and mild mushroom finishes that mimicked regular coffee without being overwhelming from mushrooms.

As with most products, mushroom coffee with complex mixes tends to be more costly due to having to source and formulate each component individually – this costs money and time! That being said, some blends may be more effective than others for reaching health goals while still meeting budgetary constraints.

What does mushroom coffee taste like?

Most mushroom coffees contain either ground or instant coffee, meaning they brew and taste similarly to regular coffee (with just a hint of earthiness from mushrooms). Even coffee-free blends may contain caffeine-containing ingredients such as chicory root, dandelion root or cacao; be sure to check labels.

Melting Forest’s Elixir is one such brand, featuring no coffee beans but instead using a blend of dandelion root, stevia leaf, and cacao to produce an energy-boosting drink that’s low-caloric but still has the taste of coffee. While its trendy aesthetic might not suit everyone, I found Melting Forest’s Elixir to be my favorite of the coffee-free blends I tested; its no side-effects approach proved my favorite of them all.
