Millions of people around the globe start their day with a steaming cup of coffee, starting the day right with energy and focus boosting stimulation as well as stimulating dopamine production (a neurotransmitter responsible for creating pleasurable sensations). But what other advantages does coffee bring to our daily routines and could there possibly be health benefits associated with our beloved beverage?

Coffee is packed with antioxidants, chemicals that protect against damage to cells in the body and may help ward off chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and certain cancers. Most prominent among them are phenolic acids and flavonoids found predominantly in roasted beans.

These antioxidants help the liver break down fat and regulate glucose, thereby decreasing risk for type 2 diabetes and improving insulin sensitivity in those already living with it. Furthermore, their anti-inflammatory properties decrease chronic disease risks and slow aging effects.

Coffee provides many amazing health benefits, not least as an abundant source of vitamin C and manganese – two essential nutrients for optimal brain, nervous system and digestive functioning.

At first glance, coffee may seem counterintuitive as an anti-oxidant beverage packed with sugar and calories; however, adding too much dairy products can undo some of its healthful effects. “For maximum impact,” advises Dr. Sean Hashmi of Kaiser Permanente Southern California; to get maximum benefit out of each daily cup it is best to avoid added sugar and use alternatives like stevia or non-dairy milks instead; when adding milk opt for unsweetened organic low fat varieties. Also use plant-based options like almond, rice or soya from where possible for maximum impact heaviness of coffee’s healthful benefits!

Your coffee roast also matters; dark roasts that have been roasted longer tend to contain more polyphenols (antioxidants that help protect against inflammation, oxidative stress and cancer), than lighter roasts. Polyphenols also play a protective role against inflammation.

Your coffee preparation matters too: add cinnamon, nutmeg or cacao powder for extra flavor or try vanilla extract made with natural ingredients instead of chemical aspartame for an even greater boost. These are just a few ways you can enhance the taste while keeping it healthier at once!
