Ganoderma contains over 120 species, and six of its more frequently encountered ones include G. lucidum, G. applanatum, G. tsugae, G. sinense and G. boinense – easily distinguished by their red-brown paint-like luster, oval-shaped spores and bilateral spore walls.

Other studies have reported that Ganoderma can significantly enhance learning and memory in a sleep deprivation model, attributing these results mainly to its beta-glucans which boost immune systems and help fight diseases; they can also help reduce fine lines and wrinkles on skin by supporting natural moisture retention mechanisms and improving skin elasticity.
Another study revealed that G. lucidum-derived triterpenoid Ganoderic Acid F was effective at inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines production and attenuating activation of microglial cells when exposed to LPS, attenuating neuroinflammation. Furthermore, BV2 microglial cells saw their level of NO decrease while inhibiting inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS) expression thus resulting in neuro-inflammation being prevented. Furthermore, glycine lactone and GLP both reduced NO levels within these cells while protecting brain from neuronal cell damage by modulating NMDA receptors activating AMP-activated Protein Kinase activating neuronal cell damage to protect brain tissue damage.

Research was undertaken into the mechanisms underlying Ganoderma’s sedative and anti-insomnia effects using systems pharmacology and multi-level interaction network analysis. Based on these analyses, results demonstrated that Ganoderma exerted its anti-insomnia effect by simultaneously employing central and peripheral mechanisms simultaneously; inhibiting insomnia-related biological processes by modulating cell survival/apoptosis regulation as well as cytokine expression through core target genes such as TNF, CASP3, JUN, HSP90aA1, and IGF-1.
Two Ganoderma lucidum recipes were selected for this research; PGB [comprising of Ganoderma lucidum spore powder and Paecilomyces hepiali mycelium], and GBS (composed of broken Ganoderma lucidum powder and GBS]. Both products demonstrated anti-insomnia effects in mice by decreasing sleep latency and increasing duration, as well as lower levels of blood lactic acid, serum urea nitrogen, hepatic glycogen, and muscle MDA.
