Preparation

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is an increasingly popular medicinal mushroom used both traditionally and holistically for treating various conditions, with research proving its antitumor, liver-protecting, blood sugar lowering effects as well as its anti-inflammatory and natural immunomodulating abilities. Furthermore, Reishi extracts have also been proven to reduce blood pressure, cholesterol levels and improve circulation.

Reishi mushrooms can be found growing on the stumps of dead hemlock trees in Eastern hemlock forests, usually after their white edges have faded and they begin turning maroon in color. Harvesting should occur as soon as possible before their spores release spores; when harvesting it’s important to select only healthy looking mushrooms and avoid picking off any that look dead or discolored.

Once harvested and dehydrated, Reishi is ready for tea production. Slice it into 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch strips before placing on a rack to dry in sunlight for 8-12 hours or using a dehydrator set between 105F-110F. Make sure all moisture has been extracted to avoid mold growth in storage over time.
