Ganoderma Lucidum

Ganoderma Lucidum, also referred to as Reishi or Lingzhi mushroom, is an edible macrofungus and widely used as herbal medicine. Historically used by Chinese medicine practitioners for anti-aging properties and its potential immune-stimulatory benefits. Polysaccharides, triterpenoids and phenolic compounds all offer anti-ageing effects as well. Furthermore, this mushroom could potentially treat diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Reishi has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity for those living with type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, it may have antiviral and hepatoprotective activities as well as its natural ability to manage cholesterol and other blood lipids; and may help treat conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome and depression by increasing energy levels within immune systems.

Tan et al. conducted an in-depth transcriptome analysis on G. lucidum using high-throughput RNA-Seq, sequencing 6 cDNA libraries from control and heat-treated mycelia samples. Heat stress had an influence on gene transcription – specifically 48 differentially expressed genes related to carbohydrate metabolism were differentially expressed under heat stress conditions.

Xiao and colleagues conducted another investigation that examined gene expression levels of F31 mycelia that is resistant to heat stress with those of wild-type (F32). Their team discovered that F31 resistance could be explained through changes in expression of genes involved in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, specifically.

As Africa grapples with emerging infectious diseases, its natural bioresources must be leveraged. Ganoderma lucidum, a common African mushroom, could hold promise as an antidote. This research investigated its bioactive components and medical applications; and concluded that Ganoderma lucidum represents a promising candidate for producing bioactive compounds against emerging illnesses in Africa. Triterpenoids (compounds composed of isoprene units) provide natural antimicrobials and immunomodulators; their use thus makes Ganoderma lucidum an antimicrobial and immunomodulator as well.
