Sustainability

Nespresso’s success as a single-serve coffee pod brand is well-documented; yet their environmental impact has come under intense scrutiny. Their plastic and aluminium components can be difficult to recycle at standard facilities; one estimate from UK plastic-free coffee pod firm Halo suggests up to 29,000 of the 35,000 single-use pods produced every minute globally end up in landfill every day! Yet Nestle’s coffee subsidiary has made strides to address this problem; in 2023 they announced they had reached an 80% recycling capacity while working on developing new materials to further reduce waste production.

AAA Sustainable Quality Program connects with 157,000 farmers to implement sustainability practices into their farms and surrounding landscapes, such as planting trees for regenerative agriculture purposes and improving livelihoods for farmers and their families. Furthermore, the company holds B Corp certification, an international movement dedicated to social responsibility that recognizes businesses meeting high standards of social and environmental responsibility and transparency.

Jessica serves as Nespresso’s US Sustainability Lead and oversees circularity, climate and community efforts that align with its B Corp certification and brand values. She oversaw curbside recycling expansion across New York and Jersey City and fosters meaningful nonprofit partnerships such as The Ali Forney Center and American Forests.

As part of its efforts to reduce its environmental footprint, Professional Origins recently unveiled the world’s first certified organic coffee blend sourced from Peru Organic, grown using methods endorsed by local farmers. The launch is intended to meet consumer demand for products that reflect terroir, culture and traditions from their country of origin.

An innovative new compostable coffee capsule is being designed to make coffee-brewing more sustainable. Crafted from corn derivative, these pods break down in just 90 days in industrial composting settings; in the near future, consumers may also have the ability to home compost them themselves.

Origins

Nespresso Professional Origins features four organic coffee capsules from around the globe, such as Peru. All four capsules in this new offering are certified organic and join other single-origin organic coffees from Brazil, Guatemala and India for a total of 15 unique coffees available from Nespresso Professional Origins.

Professional Origins line coffees are grown by independent farmers with an unwavering dedication to sustainability and quality, sharing a common vision. Their organic farming practices reduce chemical exposure while increasing soil quality for greater biodiversity. Following harvest, coffee is then roasted to alter its flavor: light roasts are milder with fruity or floral notes remaining while medium roasts offer greater body and sweeter notes; dark roasts offer stronger bitter tastes with an intense bite.

Nespresso Professional Origins program not only supports sustainable agriculture, but it also invests in its producers through partnerships with TechnoServe – a non-profit organization which works to increase capacity among smallholder farmers by sharing knowledge and expertise – allowing these relationships between farmers to share experiences and learn from one another, leading them to create their own farming techniques and improve agricultural practices.

Organic Nespresso coffee offers many advantages, including lower caffeine levels that may help you feel more energetic without experiencing jitters. Plus, organic varieties don’t contain chemicals which could compromise your health in particular for women since these substances can interfere with hormonal balance in the body and be particularly detrimental.

The Organic Capsule Collection provides an exciting new way to experience Nespresso. Crafted from high-grade ingredients and designed for all Nespresso coffee machines except Vertuoline machines, each capsule features organically grown, Fair Trade certified and ethically traded coffee from around the globe – each capsule can now be found online through Artizan Coffee website and select online retailers.

Taste

As part of its sustainability commitment, Nespresso supports farmers worldwide with expert training and sustainable farming techniques, premium prices for their coffee beans, as well as expert knowledge to make an impactful difference within their own communities and to our environment. Furthermore, they employ eco-friendly packaging practices while making their machines as energy-efficient as possible.

Nespresso uses organic ingredients in order to make their pods as healthy as possible, using minimal water consumption per capsule and low temperatures during roasting processes to preserve bean integrity and allow full flavor development. They only use hardness 90 mg/l water which perfectly complements Nespresso coffee’s unique taste.

Organic coffee from smallholder farms in Peru’s Cajamarca region comes from altitudes ranging between 5,250 to 6,890 feet above sea level, where farmers cultivate trees with great care before hand-harvesting their beans by hand. They utilize organic fertilizers made of banana peels and lucuma seeds as fertilizers while protecting their coffee plants with native trees and flowers for shade. As a result, this coffee produces fruity floral notes along with distinct green vegetable notes for an overall delicious flavor profile.

These coffee pods are compatible with Original Line Nespresso machines but not Vertuoline ones. USDA organic and Fair Trade certified, as well as vegan- and gluten-friendly. Plus they’re free from GMOs and trans fats – their packaging can even be recycled and donated back to local nonprofit organizations!

Nespresso offers an assortment of light to dark coffee blends that cater to an array of consumers’ preferences, from those with milder tastes and preferences through those who require stronger flavors. Light roasts undergo minimal roasting processes in order to retain some of the natural fruity, floral or acidic qualities inherent in coffee beans; medium roasts tend towards caramel and vanilla notes while dark roasts feature bold nutty or spiced aromas.

Packaging

Nespresso takes great pride in their position as the global leader of single-serve coffee brands, making their pods compatible with all Original Line capsule brewers (not VertuoLine) as well as working closely with other businesses to develop eco-friendly and sustainable options. To meet this obligation, they have ensured all Nespresso Original Line capsule brewers (but not VertuoLine) use compatible pods; additionally they collaborated with various organizations on eco-friendly initiatives that promote sustainability.

Nespresso recently unveiled a USDA-certified organic capsule from Peru as part of their Nespresso Professional Origins range, reflecting their vision of sustainable agriculture. This organic coffee features fruity notes with green vegetable undertones balanced by fine acidity; cultivation standards follow best practices as part of Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality program.

Nespresso’s newly developed 100% paper-based compostable capsules are yet another example of their commitment to sustainable packaging. After three years of research and development, Nespresso successfully created fully recyclable pods made up of 82% paper pulp that also features biopolymer film protection against oxidation during transport and storage – something they plan on trialing this spring in France and Switzerland before expanding further across Europe in future years.

The company’s new capsules represent an innovative step away from aluminum counterparts that have long been celebrated as recyclable. Aluminum production takes considerable energy to produce and leaves behind materials which cannot be processed at standard recycling facilities; moreover, greenhouse gas emissions increase substantially and cause environmental harm.

Nestle has introduced capsules made from recycled and organic paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Additionally, Nestle has introduced compostable, biodegradable packaging for its single-serve capsules by 2025; in so doing it aims to lower its carbon footprint by 50%.

Hardy and Ecoffee are two more eco-friendly coffee pod brands compatible with Nespresso that provide 100% recyclable/compostable pods – both European brands that source organic fair trade high altitude coffee from small farmers committed to sustainability and package it in 100% compostable bags and pods – offering sustainable options to customers interested in sustainability.
