After his buzzy indie breakthrough, few anticipated Toronto’s Abel Tesfaye would become pop music’s dark prince and reigning cocaine depression chronicler. Yet at last year’s Super Bowl halftime show he was declared pop’s reigning nihilistic prince with songs celebrating oversexed self-loathing and failed hook-ups that remain timeless classics today.

The Weeknd’s floating falsetto recalls black gospel singing traditions by transcending earthly limitations and daily indignities through singing. But his extraordinary vocal prowess comes from years of experimentation with synthesizers and drugs; his soaring vocals also draw from influences like neo-soul, funk and dance music.

Aaron Hodgins Davis

Midway through 2010, Toronto singer The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) emerged as pop’s reigning dark prince, with songs depicting self-loathing, paranoid drugs, and meaningless relationships. Even his album’s title House of Balloons suggested an indifference towards life itself.

However, his music provided much-needed respite for many in their daily struggles; and this proved true of the Super Bowl halftime performance he gave last February. His soaring falsetto style of singing which originated from African American gospel singing recalls the graceful manoeuvres of football players such as wide receivers and running backs who make post-game highlight shows with gravity-defying receptions and acrobatic moves of wide receivers and running backs that make post-game highlight shows possible.

The Weeknd’s performance perfectly captured his mysterious persona – an anonymous figure floating in a dark and smoky room while singing of freedom from captivity, numbness, and cocaine depression. After surgery he found himself trapped inside an abandoned hospital where staff attempted to capture him before making his escape via vent into an apartment building where he eventually reached for the handle of a large black garbage bag to reach for.

Aaron Hodgins Davis, founder of Hudson Valley-based mushroom farm Hodgins Harvest, hails from Saratoga Springs and initially disapproved of mushrooms when first sampling them as a young adult; but over time his appreciation grew with his knowledge; discovering more exotic varieties than just the common and plain button variety from childhood experiences.

Hodgins Harvest in Blauvelt grows a range of mushroom species, such as lion’s mane and cordyceps. Additionally, wellness tinctures made from different fungi to treat various conditions are sold here and their products can be found both online and at various farmers’ markets such as Piermont and Rockland County fairs.

Midway through this decade, Toronto singer The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) unexpectedly emerged as pop’s dark prince; an unexpected mainstream success for an artist who sings about cocaine depression, empty hook-ups and paranoid drugs. In his video for “Face Down,” which takes place on an operating table, continues his unnerving explorations of self-destructive behavior as his character confronts potentially fatal surgery; creating an intense yet beautiful meditation on loneliness, addiction and self-destruction.

Irina Adam

Halfway through this decade, Toronto singer The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) unexpectedly and unpredictably became pop’s dark prince: an icon for cocaine depression generations. His 2011 indie debut House of Balloons signaled his exceptional talent but few would have predicted his subsequent creation of some of pop music’s most oversexed and overbearing hits filled with paranoid drug use, empty hook-ups and despicable fame.

Irina Adam, NY-based multimedia artist and perfumer behind Phoenix Botanicals – twice nominated for Art and Olfaction Awards – uses only natural ingredients in her perfume compositions, designed as precious talismans to honor nature and express her marvellous creations. She draws her inspiration for scent from cross-sensory experiences such as land connection, plants/flowers relationship building, herbalism as well as storytelling – which she often employs herself!

Irina was raised hiking and camping through Romania and Indiana woods, often being scared away by shadows in Tusnad pine forest where she found solace, solitude, creativity and beauty. After graduating from Indiana University’s BFA program where she studied photography and perfumery she subsequently relocated to Brooklyn where she continues her woods wandering hobby as an avid collector of rare botanicals and passionate flower crush enthusiast.

At some point during the last decade, Toronto-born pop star Abel Tesfaye unexpectedly emerged as pop’s reigning dark prince. While 2011’s House of Balloons received critical acclaim as an original indie-pop record, few could have predicted that he would go on to create some of pop music’s darkest tracks: songs about self-loathing, drug abuse, toxic relationships and despicable fame.
