Mushroom Coffee – What Are the Benefits?
Mushroom coffee combines ground instant or regular coffee with powdered extracts of functional mushrooms like lion’s mane, cordyceps, turkey tail and reishi, which may act as adaptogens and help balance stress while supporting healthy sleep cycles.
Preliminary research indicates that mushrooms may provide cognitive, immune and energy benefits; however, more study needs to be completed. If you have health conditions or take medications that interact with mushrooms products, consult with your healthcare provider first before starting to consume mushroom products.
Why Mushrooms?
Mushroom coffee contains powerful adaptogens known as mushrooms that may help increase cognitive and immune functioning, provide antioxidants and other essential nutrients, and offer antioxidant protection. While its potential is promising, further research needs to be completed before trying dietary supplements or considering taking medications for serious medical conditions.
Mushroom coffee is a combination of ground coffee extract and medicinal mushrooms such as cordyceps, reishi, turkey tail and lion’s mane. Sometimes additional ingredients like L-theanine are included to promote calm energy levels. Mushrooms add unique earthy, nutty umami notes that set it apart from regular coffee beverages. It comes in powder form and can be brewed into deep black cups; mushrooms provide delicious earthy-nutty umami notes that give this drink its unique appeal.
Some mushroom coffee brands blend their blends with actual coffee beans while others go without beans entirely and offer caffeine-free beverages. Mushroom coffee contains between 10 to 110 milligrams of caffeine per serving – approximately half as much as what would be found in an eight-ounce cup of regular coffee! Most manufacturers suggest enjoying two cups per day.
The types of mushrooms used in mushroom coffee vary by brand; some use only chaga and turkey tail while others include lion’s mane, cordyceps and reishi – some have even been used in traditional medicine systems like Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda or Siberian folk medicine for their health-boosting benefits for centuries!
Some of these mushrooms’ effects have been extensively researched scientifically; others can be considered anecdotal or theoretical. Reishi and lion’s mane mushrooms have both been shown to reduce stress by lowering cortisol levels; additionally, Reishi has been discovered to promote longevity by supporting detoxification processes in the body.
Mushroom coffee offers many of the same advantages as regular coffee without some of its side effects like jitters, acid reflux, or difficulty sleeping. If you are sensitive to caffeine, mushroom coffee should be consumed either first thing in the morning or midmorning for maximum effect and to take advantage of its energy boost before it wears off later in the day.
Adaptogens
Adaptogens are herbs and plants thought to help the body cope with stress more easily, such as Asian countries like India. Popular for centuries in improving energy, reducing fatigue, boosting immunity and providing exercise recovery; adaptogens may also balance hormone levels while supporting natural detoxification processes in the body1.1
Many brands of mushroom coffee boast of using adaptogenic herbs and mushrooms such as chaga, reishi and cordyceps for their supposed health benefits, including increased energy and improved sleep quality. Unfortunately, scientific evidence is limited and more research needs to be conducted into how they interact with other ingredients used in mushroom coffee blends.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Rhodiola rosea (Rhodiola rosea) and Ginseng (Panax ginseng) are three widely used adaptogens used in herbal medicine to purportedly stabilize physiological functions and support homeostasis.
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center reports that adaptogens “can assist our bodies in managing stress or more rapidly restoring our natural balance after stressful situations. For instance, adaptogens could reduce cortisol levels or inhibit other substances which increase heart rate and blood pressure.”
Mushroom coffee typically contains less caffeine than traditional coffee, which may help those sensitive to stimulants manage their effects better. Furthermore, this beverage often includes reishi (an adaptogen proven to aid relaxation and reduce stress).
Supplements should not be seen as a replacement for standard care and should be used with caution. Before taking any herb or plant supplement, consult your primary care physician or registered dietitian so they can advise which dosages and doses of mushroom coffee ingredients might interact with other supplements, over-the-counter drugs or prescription drugs you already take (reishi has been linked with some blood thinners2).2
Caffeine
Caffeine is a methylxanthine stimulant and one of the world’s most widely-used psychoactive stimulants, occurring naturally in coffee beans, tea leaves and cocoa seeds as well as being added to numerous soft drinks, energy beverages and medicines. Caffeine increases brain activity and alertness while simultaneously decreasing drowsiness and fatigue to enhance athletic performance and decrease symptoms associated with stress such as anxiety or depression.
Mushroom coffee blends typically contain less caffeine than traditional coffee, which may help alleviate jitters and improve sleep quality. They may also include adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha and reishi that have potential to reduce stress, lower cortisol, and promote relaxation.
Mushroom coffee ingredients are carefully chosen. While other mushrooms can produce hallucinogenic effects, those used in mushroom coffee are non-psychoactive; thus enabling an energy and mental focus boost without experiencing the side effects associated with traditional coffee such as jitters or heartburn.
As part of our commitment to using only premium ingredients in our dose mushroom coffee product, we only source 100% coffee extract and utilize an expert combination of cordyceps, reishi, chaga and turkey tail medicinal mushrooms as well as adaptogens such as lion’s mane (an adaptogen that may support nerve growth factor production) and L-theanine, an amino acid known to reduce stress-related rises in cortisol while simultaneously increasing feelings of calmness and focused awareness.
Our mushroom coffee stands apart from others by using fruiting bodies only – an easier and cost-effective method of cultivation that provides cognitive benefits like increased focus. When grown correctly, fruiting bodies contain high concentrations of beta-glucans and terpenes which deliver these cognitive advantages – this combination ensures our customers experience maximum benefits from our product.
