Live Conscious Mushroom Coffee
Health-oriented coffee brews typically combine ground java beans with medicinal mushrooms such as chaga, cordyceps, or lion’s mane; additional adaptogens may also help regulate cortisol, the body’s stress hormone.
Gen Z consumers want to prioritize wellness and self care. But it is essential that they know what signs they should watch out for.
Origins
Medicinal mushroom coffee blends combine premium coffee beans with extracts of medicinal mushrooms known for their health benefits to produce an invigorating drink that provides all of the same caffeine benefits without any negative side effects. Common ingredients in mushroom coffee include lion’s mane, chaga and reishi mushrooms which all boast specific advantages – for instance lion’s mane may help increase nerve growth factor production in the brain to support memory function while chaga mushrooms contain high levels of antioxidants which are said to reduce oxidative stress while supporting heart health while reishi mushrooms may help calm and improve sleep quality.
Addition of medicinal mushroom extracts to coffee helps lower acidity and ease stomach upset, as well as increasing beneficial compounds present in each cup. As such, many are turning to mushroom coffee as part of a healthy lifestyle choice – offering roasters and coffee shops an opportunity to capitalize on this growing wellness economy trend while upholding quality standards.
Millennial and Gen Z consumers alike have become fascinated with adaptogenic mushroom products since their resurgence, looking for ways to balance their busy lives while prioritizing wellbeing. This trend has inspired functional coffee products, including mushroom-infused black filter coffee. But unlike simply tossing mushrooms into a cup, mushroom-infused coffee involves carefully mixing ground coffee with extracts of healing mushrooms like lion’s mane and chaga to produce an enjoyable drink experience.
Mushroom-infused coffee includes other ingredients to promote health and well-being, such as herbs and nootropics. Chaga and cordyceps can reduce oxidative stress while increasing energy levels; additionally reishi and lion’s mane mushrooms provide immune boosting properties.
Many mushroom-infused coffee companies sell their products through subscription services, enabling customers to automate monthly (or biweekly) deliveries and save money over time. Some even provide subscribers with bonus perks and recipes so they can try new blends and flavors easily. Before choosing any coffee subscription service it is essential to read their fine print and customer reviews, as some may take too long to process cancellations/changes, or may not offer suitable products that suit you personally.
Benefits
Mushroom coffee contains less caffeine than its traditional counterpart and often features ingredients to mitigate its impact, providing relief to those experiencing gastrointestinal distress or anxiety when taking in caffeine or simply wanting to limit their daily caffeine consumption. Furthermore, mushroom coffee provides sustained energy without sudden spikes and drops associated with higher caffeine intake.
Certain mushrooms have also been known to help increase energy levels while others boast anti-inflammatory and beneficial gut microbiome properties. Furthermore, mushroom blends used in mushroom coffee provide natural prebiotic sources that feed beneficial bacteria in your digestive system.
Mushroom coffee has many benefits that may make it ideal for those suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease and sensitive stomachs, and can even offer added fiber benefits – great solutions if constipation becomes an issue!
As with any food product, choosing quality mushroom coffee that is organic, fair trade and third-party tested is of utmost importance. Furthermore, when looking for mushroom coffee products it’s wise to look for products which utilize whole, intact fruits of mushrooms rather than extracts which could contain rice starch and other fillers like glycerin diluted extracts. Furthermore, look out for fruiting bodies only products without added sugars or fillers (glycerin being one such addition) and contain only fruiting bodies free from additional sugar or fillers like glycerin fillers when purchasing products that support digestion and immune health – these features will ensure maximum satisfaction from purchasing mushroom coffee products that meet quality criteria such as organic fair-trade certification or third party testing standards when selecting products with quality credentials e.g. Bacillus Coagulans as this will protect and support their integrity within your digestion and immune systems respectively.
Flavors
Most mushroom coffees in our selection were ground-bean blends that could be brewed like regular coffee, often tasting slightly earthier with a hint of mushroom funk. Our instant powder drinks could also be stirred quickly into water or milk for quick drinks in under one minute and varied widely depending on which ingredients were added such as coconut milk powder, stevia or cacao for richer tasting blends that looked and brewed just like coffee but contained less caffeine.
Functional mushroom coffees contain an array of medicinal mushrooms designed to support daily focus, energy, and immune function. Some varieties such as lion’s mane, chaga and cordyceps are known as adaptogens in herbal medicine and help the body better respond to stress.
Mushroom coffee offers an all-natural source of energy that doesn’t leave the same jitters or energy crashes associated with too much caffeine. To create mushroom coffee, powerful mushrooms are dried and ground into fine powder before being combined with other ingredients to form a soothing beverage that stimulates the mind without making you wired.
When purchasing mushroom coffee, it’s essential to select organic products made with only whole-food ingredients, without fillers like rice flour or tapioca starch. Additionally, the best brands don’t add sugar but instead provide alternative healthy sweeteners like stevia or yacon syrup instead. Finally, seek products made using only premium mushrooms from fruiting bodies (those rising above the ground) and mycelium (the vegetative portion that comprises thread-like filaments). The ideal functional mushroom coffee will feature both these components together for optimal performance.
Our winner, the Everyday Dose Bold Coffee+, made from pure mushroom extracts such as lion’s mane, reishi and chaga was an easy and enjoyable way to try mushroom coffee for the first time without fear of allergens or caffeine overload. Notably low in caffeine content with no dairy or other allergens present – our winner would make an ideal product to introduce mushroom coffee without taking risks with allergy sufferers or dairy allergies.
Ingredients
Many mushroom coffees claim to increase immunity, aid digestion, boost cognition and support weight loss – but which ones really work? In order to find out, I conducted experiments using various mushroom-infused coffees that fall into two categories. The first category featured ground coffee mixed with mushroom extracts that could be brewed just like traditional coffee; these beverages often tasted similar except slightly earthier (though my personal favorite, Everyday Dose Bold Coffee+ was flavorless). Meanwhile, mixes that contained instant coffee or other ingredients like coconut milk powder, cacao or stevia and could only be stirred into water or milk were generally more expensive and offered varying levels of flavor intensity.
When selecting a functional mushroom coffee, make sure it meets both certification criteria as well as third-party testing for fair trade and third-party certification. Avoid low-quality options that use powdered extracts instead of whole fruiting bodies or contain large amounts of added sugars or fillers like rice flour in order to lower costs.
I suggest avoiding anything containing more than five grams of caffeine per serving, though even smaller amounts won’t necessarily harm you; they just might disrupt your sleep cycle and make you more restless than necessary. Most coffees I tried contained far less than this amount.
My personal favorites were Four Sigmatic Focus and Shroomi blends, which were free of caffeine; Joe’y contained only 10 milligrams per serving from cacao in its mix; as well as Rasa Adaptogenic’s Atlas+ blend and the Everyday Dose’s adaptogenic mushroom blends that did not include coffee.
Even though most of the mushrooms in these blends have been researched for potential health benefits, there’s still insufficient data available to make an accurate judgment about which ones are the most effective. Reishi and cordyceps seem to enhance energy production at a cellular level while chaga can combat oxidative stress in humans – potentially providing people with natural energy boosts free from stimulants.
