Kopi luwak, or coffee made from beans harvested from civet cat droppings (luwak), is a popular beverage in Indonesia where it is commonly known as kopi luwak, kape luwat or caphe chn. Once harvested, these beans must then be thoroughly washed and cleaned prior to being sold for consumption. Luwak coffee is said to have an enhanced flavor due to natural selection (civets choosing only certain coffee cherries) and digestion – biological or chemical processes in an animal’s digestive system that alter the beans. Many scholars are of the opinion that as long as the beans retain their original form without impurities attached, they are permissible while others believe otherwise.
