Is Vietnamese Iced Coffee Healthy?
Vietnamese coffee is a tasty, creamy treat best enjoyed with condensed milk and ice. Its unique nutty taste and buzz make it popular throughout Vietnam; making your own Vietnamese coffee at home with a phin filter makes the process straightforward enough for anyone. Furthermore, this recipe is refined sugar free, low fat, and high protein!
Vietnamese coffee enthusiasts’ go-to drink is known as ca phe sua da, or “iced coffee with condensed milk”. This refreshing beverage typically features medium to dark roast Robust beans brewed using medium or dark roast, sweetened with condensed milk for balance and bitterness reduction. I recommend Longevity Brand sweetened condensed milk; any brand will do!
I recommend choosing a Vietnamese coffee brand that specializes in their own blend of Robust and Arabica beans, such as Trung Nguyen Coffee or Nguyen Coffee Supply, that source their beans directly from farmers. Their Premium Blend is affordable and easily found at Asian grocery stores; I personally adore their Culi brew, featuring Robusta/Arabica blend with chocolate notes!
When making Vietnamese coffee, be sure to use a medium fine grind so the grounds are not too coarse – anything coarser will result in an unpleasant drink! When using a phin filter for brewing, allow your beverage to steep for five minutes prior to serving – this allows more flavorful beans to come through than with traditional methods which only permit 30 seconds bloom time! This method also creates an exceptionally smooth and balanced cup!
