Medicinal mushrooms have become increasingly popular, and one mushroom coffee blend in particular has recently gained notoriety as being potentially effective at managing ADHD symptoms. Unfortunately, however, many of the claims being made about it by mushroom coffee purveyors have yet to be proven scientifically.

Mushrooms contain numerous compounds with potential mental and physical benefits. But not all mushrooms are created equal – selecting the optimal blend of mushroom-infused coffee could be key in realizing any possible gains.

Mushroom coffee often includes the herb lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus), which is well-known to help enhance cognitive function. This ingredient contains compounds called hericenones and erinacines which stimulate nerve growth factor to support brain health – this could make focusing and learning easier, according to one 2023 study involving only ten participants completing a thinking task faster than those in the control group – suggesting it could boost cognition and mood for those suffering from ADHD.

Lion’s Mane mushroom may offer more than cognitive support; it also may possess anti-inflammatory properties that could benefit those with ADHD. This is crucial, as those suffering from the condition frequently experience digestive problems related to gut microbiota – leading to symptoms including inattention, impulsivity and emotional dysregulation. Drinking mushroom coffee with lion’s Mane mushrooms as an addition could improve digestion while strengthening immunity.

Other mushrooms found in mushroom coffee, like reishi and cordyceps, have long been used to reduce stress levels and boost energy. Reishi in particular is recognized as an adaptogen – meaning it helps the body regulate cortisol, a steroid hormone known to affect mood and behavior. According to one study published by Journal of Medicinal Food, Reishi may even help improve sleep for those with ADHD.

Mushroom coffee has the potential to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety; when combined with less caffeine intake and the stress-reducing properties of its ingredients (chaga and reishi for instance), this could provide people with ADHD with better quality sleep at night.

However, even though mushroom-infused blends can help manage ADHD symptoms, it’s important to keep in mind that they should never take the place of prescribed mental health medication. Instead, they should be seen as complementary natural remedies which can supplement behavioral therapy and lifestyle changes to promote overall wellbeing and promote overall wellbeing – such as diet, regular exercise and sufficient sleep as effective solutions.
