Is Ganoderma Coffee Really Good For You?
Ganoderma lucidum (Lingzhi or Reishi), an ancient medicinal mushroom, has long been revered for its healing powers. Coffee is another beverage known for promoting health; by combining these two elements into Ganoderma Coffee, its potential benefits may increase while keeping its taste intact.
Animal studies and in vitro research studies have demonstrated the antioxidant, antihypertensive, hypoglycaemic, and lipid-reducing properties of G. lucidum; however, clinical trials have yielded mixed results. G. lucidum ethanol extract significantly prevented cardiotoxicity induced by Adriamycin-mediated cardiotoxicity in rats by protecting antioxidant enzymes like GPx, GST and SOD from decrease. G. lucidum spore oil administration to carotid-artery-ligated mice was shown to prevent neointimal thickening two weeks post surgery and normalise ejection fraction, correct fractional shortening and reduce left ventricular hypertrophy by decreasing circular RNA expression of Foxo3 (Rajasekaran and Kalaimagal 2012). This article presents a brief review of key studies regarding the potential cardiometabolic benefits of G. lucidum/Lingzhi/Reishi preparations standardised with known active compounds and highlights why large controlled clinical trials must be conducted to ascertain any potential health benefits from ganoderma coffee containing FYGL-type G. lucidum products with active compounds known to exist.
