Is French Vanilla Coffee Halal?
Tim Hortons fans likely love their French Vanilla coffee. Unfortunately, however, many are unaware that it does not meet Halal certification as it contains Vanilla Extract which is prohibited under Islam.
Vanilla extract is produced by distilling and macerating whole vanilla beans in dilute ethyl alcohol, the predominant solvent (Riaz and Chaudry 2004). Following distillation, the resultant liquid is known as natural vanilla flavoring or similar terms and must contain less than 0.5% alcohol to meet IFANCA Halal certification criteria. In order to certify IFANCA products as Halal-certified products, technologists perform an in-depth audit on ingredients, formulation, production process, packaging as well as ensure the ethyl used is always derived from grain or synthetic sources rather than from beverages (Khamr).
Vanilla oleoresin (also referred to as vanilla powder) is the non-alcoholic counterpart of vanilla flavoring and can be found in various products including hot and cold beverages such as coffee, tea, cappuccino and others as well as in baked goods like ice cream and other treats.
