Dunkin Donuts’ packaged coffee helps farmers who grow it. Since 2004, they’ve purchased Fair Trade Certified beans as an additional income stream for those involved in cultivating it, supporting environmental and social welfare programs in turn.

Although their corporate responsibility page doesn’t mention sustainability initiatives, Starbucks began assessing their environmental impact in 2008 and developed an energy efficiency pamphlet for franchisees in 2010. They currently have 8,800 locations with one LEED-certified store; additionally they use paper cups instead of Styrofoam which may sit in landfills for over 500 years.

Dunkin Donuts does not appear to offer organic or shade grown coffee, according to research conducted by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center and Rainforest Alliance certification agencies. They were approached about offering their Bird-Friendly certification, but declined. However, according to Smithsonian representatives they approached Dunkin Donuts several years ago with this offer and it ultimately declined their participation.
