Is Coffee With Soy Milk Healthy?
Coffee-drinkers commonly add milk to their cup, but many others are opting for soymilk instead, due to its health benefits. Soybeans contain isoflavones which have been proven to reduce hot flashes among menopausal women as well as provide bone and heart support – these factors alone are some of the many reasons soybean milk has become increasingly popular over time.
But Is It Healthy? According to recent studies, when coffee and soy milk are taken together at once, isoflavones present in soymilk bond with chlorogenic acids present in coffee, creating complexes which are excreted through urine; these complexes are reversible and do not affect body’s hormone balance, although their exact impact must still be studied further.
Study findings revealed that concurrent ingestion of soymilk and coffee led to an increased urinary excretion of isoflavone aglycones and metabolites. Researchers believe this to be caused by coffee’s phenolic acid reacting with soy protein while isoflavones from soymilk bound themselves onto it reversibly, and ISO was eventually excreted through urine.
Soy milk contains both isoflavones and lecithin, an oil- and water-soluble molecule which creates a stable emulsion when added to water, giving soymilk its smooth, creamy taste. Lecithin has also been linked with reduced inflammation levels and lower cholesterol levels.
Soybean milk is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, and eating enough can lower your risk of heart disease and stroke by decreasing C-reactive protein levels in your blood. Omega-3s also reduce inflammation in arteries and veins.
Soy milk is more nutritional than cow’s milk for several reasons, including its absence of saturated fats and increased amounts of dietary fiber, protein, potassium, vitamin B6/riboflavin/folic acid/calcium content. Some brands of soy milk have even been fortified with extra calcium/phosphorous/vitamin A/D fortification – though non-fat soy milk may still contain higher sodium levels; drinking non-fat soy milk with your coffee might be more suitable as its flavor will be less strong while also having less sodium content compared with full fat cow’s milk!
