Is Coffee Liquor Halal?
Coffee liqueur is not considered halal in Islam due to the presence of ethanol which is forbidden under Islamic law.
Ethanol, or alcohol of any sort, can be found in many foods and beverages, ranging from food products to drinks. Ethanol produced from alcohol derived from pork is generally forbidden (khamr) while there may be exceptions; to stay on the safe side it’s best to steer clear of products containing ethanol unless they carry an official Halal certification.
Food items containing alcohol include vinegars, wine products and liqueurs like white wine vinegar, red wine vinegar and balsamic vinegar – these types of products don’t contain enough to get anyone drunk; thus making them halal products.
Notably, alcohol beverages are frequently utilized in restaurants. Flambe is one method of preparation that uses alcohol as fuel; dousing food in it and then lighting it ablaze makes these halal dishes non-halal even after all the alcohol has been burned off or cooked off completely. Other dishes made using alcoholic ingredients include black forest cake which uses Kahlua sauce (coffee-based Mexican liquor) as its basis, as well as sandy drinks like smoothies.
