Is Coffee Extract Halal?
How coffee beans were grown can influence whether or not they are considered halal; however, their status in terms of finished product halal depends on supporting ingredients used and processes involved during processing. Key considerations here include:
First and foremost is the source and type of oil being used; these must comply with Islamic law by being free from additives that could make them forbidden. Butter fat must come from animals slaughtered according to Islamic law. Second is emulsifiers and flavorings made with halal milk/ghee and free from non-halal ingredients or processing aids, while their flavoring must also meet those standards.
The following ingredients are generally considered halal:
Vitamins from non-Halal sources: Certain vitamins (like A and D ) can come from animal and synthetic sources and could therefore be considered non-halal unless certified as such.
Sweeteners: All natural sweeteners such as honey, cane sugar, stevia and date syrup are halal while some artificial sweeteners may contain forbidden ingredients.
Flavorings: Many natural and artificial flavors are considered halal as long as they do not contain ingredients considered forbidden by Sharia law, such as alcohol and certain amino acids. If unsure, their status can be verified through a trusted halal certifier.
