Is Coffee Actually Healthy?
Start each morning off right with a healthy cup of brewed coffee – it has numerous health benefits that may surprise some! While caffeine might appear unhealthy at first glance, properly prepared coffee offers numerous health advantages.
Studies have revealed that coffee drinkers are less likely to die than non-coffee drinkers, due to its ability to prevent certain forms of cancer and heart disease. Coffee contains many vital nutrients – magnesium, potassium, folic acid and antioxidants among others – which play a key role in its effectiveness against cancer and heart disease.
One study revealed that those who consumed two cups of coffee per day had a 40% lower risk of dying from any cause, and women who drank two to three cups daily had 17% reduced heart disease mortality and 19% cancer mortality compared with those who didn’t drink any coffee at all. Coffee contains magnesium, potassium and folic acid which all work to lower blood pressure while helping your body absorb and utilize all the other vitamins and supplements you consume.
One cup of freshly brewed coffee provides you with vitamin B2, B3, and manganese; these nutrients work to produce energy and regulate nervous systems while manganese supports bone growth and tissue development. In addition, coffee’s chlorogenic acid provides protection from chronic diseases like diabetes and glaucoma.
Not all coffee is equally nutritious; most varieties contain unnecessary additives like sugar. But many can still reap its healthful rewards by brewing it themselves or purchasing freshly roasted batches from coffee shops that use clean ingredients. When on-the-go, opt for organic whole milk or half and half rather than the processed almond, coconut or oat milks often used by barsistas; these usually contain artificial sweeteners, gums and chemicals you don’t want in your body.
As for caffeine consumption, remember that your tolerance will gradually build over time. If caffeine sensitivity is an issue for you, try limiting yourself to just one cup per day from freshly roasted beans with no additional sweeteners such as grass-fed butter or collagen supplements for long-lasting energy without the crash that often follows caffeine use. And make sure you purchase it from a coffee shop using filtered water if available!
