Is Chemex Coffee Healthier?
The Chemex is one of the world’s best-known pour-over coffee makers, boasting an hourglass shape made of nonporous borosilicate glass that’s displayed prominently at modern art museums like New York City’s MOMA. First invented in 1941 and designed to produce clean, bright coffee without sediment deposits – its unique filter is known for achieving this aim.
This filter features three layers and is 30% heavier than regular paper filters, designed to aerate grounds so water can fully pass through them and extract their flavor. Some prefer to rinse their filter first before use; if this step doesn’t appeal to you, just skip this step instead!
To use a Chemex, simply place a filter over the carafe and add ground coffee. Use a scale to zero out and pour enough water to soak through all of your grounds in 30 seconds before continuing pouring. Depending on how strong of a coffee flavor you prefer, try out various ratios until finding one you enjoy best; most people settle on 1:15, or about 3 tablespoons per cup of water.
Some may prefer the taste of Chemex coffee because it strips natural oils away, but for those who appreciate clear, well-filtered coffee that highlights all its flavors it could certainly be worth giving it a try.
