Every morning, many people look forward to enjoying a cup of coffee as part of their morning ritual. Unfortunately, however, caffeine’s presence in coffee may worsen acid reflux symptoms by stimulating gastric secretions and forcing stomach acid up into the esophagus.

Other caffeinated beverages may exacerbate reflux symptoms besides coffee. Soda and energy drinks contain high concentrations of caffeine which may pharmacologically relax the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) leading to acid reflux. Furthermore, tomato and citrus juice products contain acids which irritate the esophagus further – further aggravating symptoms.

Decaf coffee may not be ideal for those suffering from acid reflux due to the roasting process, which increases acidity levels. According to research conducted on various individuals, decaf can even trigger gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Cold brew coffee tends to be less acidic than its regular counterpart due to the use of lower temperature water for extraction of acids and oils from coffee grounds, leading to less acidity overall.

Alternative treatments for acid reflux may include herbal teas (chamomile, licorice and ginger), low fat milk and plant-based milks such as oat, flax or almond milk), smoothies, coconut water and nonacidic juices like cucumber carrot and aloe vera juices. Moderation with these drinks should help alleviate symptoms; otherwise contact your physician who may suggest other treatments or medication that could provide relief – remember GERD/acid reflux can be serious, even leading to scarring damage of the esophagus; seek medical advice immediately if symptoms continue recur.
