Is Blue Mountain Coffee Organic?
Blue Mountain Coffee, known by connoisseurs worldwide as both its Rolls-Royce and champagne counterpart, is revered by coffee connoisseurs across the globe for its exquisite quality and unique combination of climate conditions, soil type and meticulous processing methods that makes this unique brew truly one-of-a-kind. Read on to understand more of its story behind this exquisite brew.
Jamaica’s Blue Mountains provide the ideal conditions and soil type for creating some of the finest coffee around. Their fertile volcanic soil boasts high organic matter content and offers excellent drainage, which enables coffee plants to absorb and retain essential vitamins and minerals for growth and development. Furthermore, their slow ripening process in cooler conditions adds flavorful complexity that sets their beans apart from others on offer worldwide.
Additionally, the high elevation allows coffee plants to develop slowly at higher elevations, creating beans with rich and complex flavor profiles and known for their mild taste, lack of bitterness and creamy texture.
Apart from its ideal growing conditions, cultivation of Blue Mountain coffee provides many Jamaican families with a substantial source of income. Furthermore, due to limited production and exclusivity of this brew (80% exported out of Jamaica alone!), Blue Mountain coffee cannot easily be found elsewhere in the world.
Blue Mountain Coffee has long been recognized as an icon of Jamaican pride and culture due to its limited availability, representing their heritage while also playing an essential role in Jamaican economic development.
Robusta beans, commonly grown and found at Starbucks, contain four times as much caffeine than arabica beans used to craft Blue Mountain coffee. Arabica beans used in Blue Mountain are carefully selected from estates of exceptional quality before being carefully roasted to preserve and enhance their unique and exquisite flavors in every cup produced.
Blue mountain coffee must satisfy a series of criteria in order to be labeled as such, including meeting altitude and soil type requirements, slow ripening process and rigorous inspection/grading processes. Even beans that do not meet this standard cannot be certified as blue mountain but may still be considered high quality coffees.
Once harvested, Jamaica’s coffee beans go through an intensive and meticulous process that ensures only top-grade coffee is produced. Each bean is handpicked and carefully examined for ripeness and quality before being wet processed and sun-dried to guarantee only premium-grade beans are produced. This ensures only high quality products come out of Jamaica’s coffee production system.
As part of the final stage in brewing coffee, beans are transported to a mill where they are carefully cleaned and separated from any impurities. After this step, coffee is aged similarly to wine in barrels to protect its integrity while increasing both taste and aroma.
Organic Blue Mountain coffee is not only better for the environment, but it is also good for your health. By purchasing this scrumptious beverage, you are helping support sustainable and ethical practices worldwide.
