Mushroom tea is more than just an indulgent beverage; its bioactive compounds provide powerful health benefits that support immune function, reduce stress and regulate blood pressure while aiding detoxification. When regularly consumed as part of your wellness goals, mushroom tea can be invaluable in reaching those goals. It’s important to know how best to store them either homemade or store-bought products from supermarkets for maximum effect.

Mushroom tea can be stored for up to three days in an airtight glass container with a lid in the refrigerator, although its quality will inevitably diminish over time due to heat from boiling water degrading some beneficial compounds found in mushrooms. To maintain optimal quality before serving, be sure to reheat gently before heating again.

Simply steep dried mushrooms in hot water until their powder or pieces have fully immersed, adding one or two teaspoons per cup of water in a pot and bringing to a boil before reducing heat to simmer and letting tea steep for 20-30 minutes before straining through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove solids. Repeating this process will produce increasingly lighter in flavor and potency results with each subsequent brew.

Add other ingredients to your mushroom tea to enhance its flavor and nutritional benefits, including ginger (grated or ground), cinnamon, star anise, rooibos or pepper. Or even blend several types of mushroom varieties together for an infusion with multiple medicinal benefits – but beware not to overdo the add-ins as too many will mask its delicate flavors.

Ideally, when making mushroom tea right away it’s best to store the rehydrated mushrooms in their original packaging on either the counter or refrigerator. As fresh mushrooms can quickly spoil when exposed to moisture or humidity; dried mushrooms have longer shelf lives as their drying process exposes them to less humidity than fresh varieties.

To maximize the longevity of reishi, chaga, turkey tail or other mushroom teas, store them at low temperature in an oven. This will preserve their flavor and texture; just be careful not to store other foods in there that could hasten spoilage of your mushrooms!
