How to Make Organic Cold Brew Coffee at Home
Cold brew coffee, produced without hot water, tends to be less acidic than its conventional drip counterpart and more soothing and smooth than ever. Making your own organic cold brew at home is easier and cost-effective than visiting coffee shops every morning, plus you can customize its concentration according to your own personal preferences.
How to Brew Organic Cold Brew Coffee
Making organic cold brew coffee is easy; combine ground beans and water, let it steep overnight in the refrigerator, then strain. Overtime, oily acids will be extracted, creating coffee with much less bitterness that’s also much more concentrated; you only need half as much coffee to achieve an equivalent dose of caffeine than when drinking drip coffee; furthermore, its gentler on your stomach due to not extracting these oily acids!
Dark roast coffees are recommended, since their richer flavors help balance out the less acidic nature of cold brew. Selecting an appropriate grind size is also key; too fine grounds will float together as a dense mass and won’t absorb as much water while too coarse grounds could result in gritty or murky results from straining your coffee.
For optimal extraction results, gently mix your grounds into water before stirring for approximately 30 seconds to make sure all grounds are fully submerged by liquid and that all mixture is even. Alternatively, cover and store in your refrigerator for 12-24 hours for optimal results.
Once the brew is complete, simply strain it for a cold brew concentrate that can be adjusted according to your tastes with water, milk or creamer. For an additional sweet touch add teaspoons of sugar or tablespoons of maple syrup if desired. You could also use your cold brew as the basis of coffee soda: mix it with seltzer water and serve it cold over ice as a faux affogato!
Start by mixing together one cup of cold brew concentrate and four cups of water in a pitcher, starting with this ratio as an example; adjust to suit yourself! And if desired, you may add or decrease coffee grounds depending on desired strength of brew – higher ratio = stronger taste; for milder flavors use less grounds/more water as per above instructions – don’t forget a splash of cream as an extra creamy treat for an added creamy touch!
