How to Brew Healthy Coffee

Coffee offers many benefits, from helping us feel energized and alert to protecting against heart disease and some cancers. Most of these benefits stem from polyphenols found in coffee beans – not simply caffeine alone – though how we consume our cup can influence its quantity and quality; so choosing healthy beans, brewing methods, calories, fat and sugar intake all play key roles in enjoying an energizing cup.
Your choice of ground beans is also critical for its overall health benefits. A finer grind contains more polyphenols; while coarser grinding allows more polyphenols through, potentially leading to damage in your stomach and intestines.
Burr grinders provide the finessed grind that you desire, while roasting can have a dramatic impact; lighter roasts contain more polyphenols and chlorogenic acids than dark roasts, which may help protect against diabetes and obesity, according to research published in BMJ Open.
French press coffee brewing is often considered the superior method. The process uses hot water poured quickly over ground coffee in one burst to extract maximum polyphenols and beneficial compounds from its grounds, while being less acidic than alternatives such as espresso; which may help protect against liver disease and other conditions, according to Frontiers in Nutrition research.
Cold brew and flash brew methods of coffee preparation should also be considered, both employing a Japanese technique of pouring hot coffee over ice to produce cool coffee with rapid extraction process that retains beneficial compounds without becoming bitter or too acidic. Both may also be easier for individuals with sensitive stomachs to digest.
