Ganoderma Coffee, commonly referred to as Reishi in various cultures, combines regular coffee with extracts derived from Ganoderma Lucidum mushrooms – often known as Reishi in Japan – for an unusual yet delicious beverage experience.

Fungi have long been used to reduce cardiovascular stress and improve heart function. Recently, evidence shows they can even prevent neointimal thickening following carotid-artery-ligation in mice models.

How is Ganoderma Lucidum Coffee Produced?

Ganoderma, commonly referred to as the “mushroom of immortality”, is an adaptogen that promotes relaxation, immune support and restful energy without spikes and crashes. When combined with caffeine it creates an experience similar to coffee without the jitters; its low acidity means it is gentle on stomach, teeth and tastebuds alike.

This coffee is created from Ganoderma Lucidum mushrooms and Chinese medicine extracts ground into powder and combined with coffee. Not only does the beverage possess all of the characteristics associated with regular coffee, but also has numerous health benefits thanks to the medicinal mushrooms like Cortex Eucommiae, Rhizoma Polygonati, Codonopsis and Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae found within.

Preparing the mixture requires measuring and mixing all of its components, grinding them into a powder form, cooking with water until it reaches boiling point, then stirring and filtering until smooth – producing either regular coffee or herbal tea products for consumption or further use.

An intriguing combination of functional mushrooms and coffee, this beverage has become an increasingly popular option for those seeking to include more functional herbs into their daily lives. Coffee-mushroom blends may help strengthen immunity, promote restful sleep and relieve stress – it may even improve concentration and concentration levels! This beverage can be prepared just like regular coffee but tends to be slightly less bitter.

This coffee features Ganoderma spore powder for an exquisite and distinct flavor, adding unique health benefits as well. Spores are mushroom seeds released once mature and similar to pollen found on flowers; thus adding this unique ingredient gives this coffee its signature taste and additional benefits such as lower cholesterol levels and regulation of blood sugar levels as well as being packed with antioxidants that may help fight signs of aging.

What Are the Health Claims Made About Ganoderma Lucidum Coffee?

Ganoderma lucidum has been shown to exhibit antihypertensive, lipid-lowering and antioxidant effects in vitro; however, clinical studies of its efficacy are inconsistent due to a variety of factors including standardisation issues between products, different study populations and use of G. lucidum preparations with differing active components (Wachtel-Galor et al. 2016).

Ganoderma’s antihypertensive properties are attributed to its polysaccharides and triterpenes. Polysaccharides appear to lower blood pressure by inhibiting activity of Adenylate Cyclase in renal Artery Vasoconstriction resulting in increased blood flow resulting in decreased blood pressure while triterpenes may help lower cholesterol by blocking HMG-CoA reductase activity in Hepatocytes thereby leading to cholesterol reduction.

Studies on the effect of Ganoderma extract in vivo revealed that 2.5 and 5% dried Ganoderma significantly reduced total and LDL-cholesterol levels for both hamsters and minipigs, increased HDL cholesterol, inhibited pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1 and TNF production, as well as inhibiting excessive production of NO, PGE2 and excessive pro-inflammatory cytokines such as NOXA-induced NO-PGE2 production, respectively.

An 18-week controlled study involving 62 patients with type 2 diabetes demonstrated that taking Ganopoly three times daily for 12 weeks for treatment significantly reduced fasting glucose and postprandial plasma glucose concentrations, as well as HbA1c levels, when compared to a placebo group. Furthermore, Ganoderma ethanol extract reduced serum glucose area under the curve after high-glucose oral tolerance test in type 2 diabetic db/db mouse models by 60% compared with controls.

Ganoderma has also been reported as being neuroprotective. Studies have demonstrated its ability to guard against heat stress by upregulating genes involved in antioxidant defense systems as well as neurotransmitters like Acetylcholinesterase and ATP synthase. Studies have also demonstrated how DHA protects against neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s by modulating MAO-A and 5-HT receptors to protect neuronal protein degradation and preserve MAO activity in cells. However, these claims may be limited due to other ingredients present in coffee such as caffeine having similar neuroprotective effects and no specific Ganoderma compounds having been identified that act on this aspect (Benedict & Cockett 2015). Furthermore, all research conducted thus far was on laboratory animals only and not human subjects.

What Are the Side Effects of Ganoderma Lucidum Coffee?

Ganoderma lucidum contains various peptides, polysaccharides and triterpenes that have been demonstrated to exhibit antihypertensive, lipid-lowering, antiacetylcholinesterase activity, antioxidant and anticancer properties. G. lucidum also demonstrated hypoglycaemic activity in normal and diabetic mice using water extraction; specifically its FYGL fraction was shown to boost insulin secretion while decreasing hepatic glucose output and increasing both skeletal muscle and adipose tissue glucose disposal – this effect was attributed to properties such as b-glucan, Lucidenic acid and lucidal acids along with FYGL’s ability to preserve pancreatic islets.

Reishi mushrooms are widely recognized adaptogens, meaning they assist the body in maintaining homeostasis and relieving stress – both psychological and physiological – by increasing resistance to stress factors and stabilizing physiological processes. Reishi has been shown to boost immunity by increasing white blood cell count, activating NK cells, stimulating leukocytes, and having anti-inflammatory effects; other potential benefits may include lowering cholesterol and blood sugar levels, supporting heart health, strengthening immunity systems and alleviating depression.

Studies on reishi’s antioxidative activity have demonstrated its fresh fruiting bodies contain polysaccharides with strong 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and chelating capacities, while their ethanol extracts exhibit potency superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. However, their antioxidative and chelating capacities depend heavily on their oligomeric structure.

Even though we can’t produce our own reishi mushrooms, they are readily available as supplements. Reishi supplements contain various active compounds – beta d-glucans and triterpenes being the most significant. They come in powder or capsule forms and may be taken alongside caffeine for increased immune-boosting and sleep enhancement properties.

Reishi should not be seen as a replacement for coffee; rather it should be added as an ingredient to enhance it. To make delicious and healthful Ganoderma Lucidum coffee, start with high-grade beans before sprinkling reishi mushroom extracts over them. Avoid instant coffee powder-infused beverages or those combining instant coffee powder and cocoa powder as this could compromise quality significantly.
