Does Mushroom Coffee Affect Birth Control?
Mushroom coffee is an innovative beverage made by combining regular coffee with extracts of medicinal mushrooms such as Lion’s Mane, Chaga, Cordyceps and Reishi for cognitive and immune-enhancing benefits, making this beverage a healthier alternative to regular coffee beverages.
Even with all the hype surrounding mushroom coffee drinks, many of their purported benefits have yet to be scientifically verified. Furthermore, individual blends may contain different ingredients so it can be hard to know exactly what’s being provided to consumers.
As such, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) strongly suggests consulting your doctor prior to taking any supplement, such as mushroom coffee. This advice is especially pertinent if you have preexisting health conditions or medications; also various mushroom species used may interact with other medications and should therefore be verified with your healthcare provider before consumption.
Though research into most of the adaptogenic mushrooms and herbs found in these beverages remains limited, a few have shown to offer promising long-term effects. Chaga in particular has been found to support immune function while decreasing inflammation; Reishi is well known for its soothing qualities.
Caffeine is one of the key components in most mushroom coffee products and can help boost energy levels, focus and concentration. However, its amount can differ and not always appear on labels; this can pose particular difficulties for those with sensitive digestive systems or medical conditions that cause side effects like jitters or nausea from caffeine intake.
Although mushroom coffee typically contains less caffeine than its coffee counterpart, it’s still important to consult your physician prior to drinking any high-caffeine beverages during pregnancy. In addition to acting as a stimulant, caffeine may also cross the placenta and adversely impact its development, so it would be prudent to limit consumption during this period.
Avoid Chaga and Reishi mushrooms that have blood-thinning effects; these could pose serious complications during childbirth and interfere with your body’s ability to clot naturally. As such, pregnant women are advised to choose low-caffeine mushroom coffees that contain Lion’s Mane or Cordyceps as these will provide additional clotting capabilities without interfering with natural processes in your system.
