Can I Add Powdered Mushroom to Coffee?
Are You Drinking Mushroom Coffee? | Social Media Buzz It’s likely you have come across posts with people drinking a warm beverage with “mushroom coffee” written across it on social media lately, containing mushroom powder blended into coffee to produce an energy boosting beverage with less caffeine than typical coffee beverages – purporting to increase focus and energy levels as a result of taking regular doses of caffeine, but this trendy concoction may or may not live up to its hype? But is Mushroom Coffee Worth the Hype? | Social Media Buzz
Though whole mushrooms are delicious and nutritionally packed, not much research supports the health claims made by mushroom coffee purveyors. Furthermore, it can be expensive; 12 oz (340 g) bags typically cost about twice as much as regular coffee; yet some consumers believe its benefits outweigh its cost.
Mushrooms contain phytochemicals with antioxidant, antibacterial and immune-enhancing properties. Depending on their species, mushrooms can also provide additional benefits like terpenes and fatty acids as well as proteins, B vitamins and beta glucans. For optimal mushroom-infused coffee experience, look for one made with organic ingredients without added fillers or additives – look out for one with the USDA organic seal or vegan or gluten-free certifications – these will give an indication of its quality.
Some mushroom-infused coffees contain more coffee than others, but all follow a similar basic formulation: ground and dried mushrooms are combined with water or milk to form a beverage. Popular varieties used in this formula are lion’s mane, cordyceps and chaga; each has unique health benefits including increasing energy, improving mental clarity and relieving stress.
To assess these claims, we gathered 11 mushroom-infused coffees from different brands and tested their claims. Our experiments produced an array of earthy yet subtle flavors suited perfectly for morning cup of Joe. Some varieties even boasted fruity and sweet tastes while some required an additional splash of creamer for balance.
If you’re curious to give this trend a try, we advise starting small and gradually building up to full servings. Additionally, please consult a healthcare provider or dietitian before beginning as certain mushroom varieties such as chaga can contain high levels of oxalates which may lead to digestive issues and increase kidney stone risk. Finally, this coffee should not be consumed if you suffer from chronic inflammation or have other serious medical conditions.
