Coffee has long been considered an indispensable energy source, helping us get through each day without falling short of energy or fatigue.

As coffee was introduced into Europe, its arrival was met with enthusiasm and quickly developed into its own distinct coffee culture. Yet Sweden remained suspicious of this newly introduced drink – banning it for over one hundred years!

Origins

Coffee has a long, complex and mysterious history, but its exact source remains uncertain. According to one legend, goatherder Kaldi discovered coffee while exploring an Ethiopian forest and observed how his goats enjoyed nibbling the berries of specific trees that seemed to provide endless energy. When reporting his discoveries to an abbot of nearby monastery, who made a drink from those berries which kept him awake through prayer; thereafter its rejuvenating properties spread throughout Muslim countries worldwide.

King Gojong (1852-1919) first used coffee in modern-day Korea around 1894 as part of his plan to prevent invasion from Japan and generate income by cultivating and selling it as an income-generating enterprise. To process his beans more efficiently, he established his own coffee brand called Ariosa that sold nationwide using distinctive packaging with redeemable coupons – one of the earliest instances where redeemable coupons were included with its packaging design.

Ariosa Coffee was among the first companies to perfect the roasting process, which was key in creating an enjoyable beverage. John Arbuckle was renowned for his expertise and earned multiple patents for his innovations. Additionally, John also owned various buildings that stored and processed beans; had factories producing woven bags used for shipping; as well as laundry services that cleaned and dried them to be reused again later.

Coffee’s global expansion was hastened by its adaptability, with European explorers carrying it into various climates on their journeys; plantations were established all across Ceylon, India, Brazil Central America South America Africa etc. While not every plantation succeeded with coffee seed propagation there continued its spread via traders missionaries indentured slaves who brought seeds with them wherever they went.

Dangers

King Gustav III of Sweden was born in 1746 and spent most of his life taking action against coffee. He imposed high taxes and even bans on its consumption – likely motivated by several factors including protecting beer production locally as well as an antipathy towards early adopters of coffee production and his dislike of cafe culture.

The King wanted to use scientific evidence to show that coffee consumption was harmful, so he recruited two prisoners as experimental subjects in what became one of the first ever randomized clinical trials regarding caffeine consumption.
