Is Coffee Haram Or Halal?
Coffee is one of the world’s favorite beverages and comes in numerous varieties and flavors. While all coffee beans must meet halal standards for processing, handling, and additives to meet certification standards. Halal certification assures consumers that ingredients and products they purchase meet high-quality standards without any prohibited materials present in them.
Islam provides detailed rules regarding what foods, beverages and processes are permissible (halal) or forbidden (haram). While certain of these laws remain immutable over time – for instance meat, alcohol and energy drinks have often been debated; in some countries these could even be considered halal while not in others (e.g. Coca-Cola is considered halal in certain parts of America but not everywhere due to certain markets adding non-halal sweeteners and potentially prohibited flavorings which void its status).
At one point in history, some scholars considered coffee unlawful due to its caffeine content, which was seen as similar to drugs in terms of its effects on the body such as intoxication and addiction. Other scholars also feared it might cause social decay and discord; consequently, Ottoman Sultan Murad IV banned its consumption and had anyone caught drinking it hanged.
However, after much consideration and consultation among Islamic figures, it was concluded that caffeine did not possess the same intoxicating properties as drugs and alcohol. Furthermore, its effects are dependent on how much is consumed as well as an individual’s reaction to caffeine – therefore Sultan Selim I once more permitted coffee consumption.
Though coffee does not contain any haram substances, its production process involves fermentation using yeast. Yeast is a type of fungus that produces alcohol – something forbidden by Islamic law as an intoxicant.
Therefore, it is vitally important that only halal-certified coffee is consumed. Halal certified coffee consists of beans that have been processed using only permissible methods before being brewed with water and sugar – all ingredients which don’t fall under any category that prohibit consumption by Muslims. When purchasing, make sure the packaging includes ingredient lists and logos verifying halal certification before purchasing.
