Bulletproof coffee is a hot beverage made of black coffee, unsalted butter and oil of your choice. It is popular among those following low-carbohydrate diets such as ketogenic or paleo diets as well as those wanting to increase energy and focus levels. The recipe can easily be customized to individual preferences while serving it alongside various healthy toppings – enhancing mental clarity while simultaneously increasing satiety and mood!
Dave Asprey, an American technology entrepreneur, designed this recipe. He claims he shed 100 pounds through adopting a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet. According to Asprey’s account, mixing one tablespoon of grass-fed butter and one teaspoon of MCT oil (medium chain triglyceride oil) in a blender with black coffee provides sustained energy without leading to hunger pangs; also, fats found within coffee help the body absorb caffeine more slowly for sustained energy levels and brain boost.
While bulletproof coffee provides many health advantages, consuming it on an ongoing basis could be harmful and not suitable for everyone. Consumption of butter and fatty oils could increase cholesterol, potentially becoming an issue for those living with heart disease or other medical conditions. Caffeine has also been known to stimulate the central nervous system leading to anxiety headaches and even sleep disturbances; so before beginning your own bulletproof coffee journey it would be wise to consult a doctor or registered dietitian first.
Coffee is an excellent source of antioxidants and metabolism boosters, but too much caffeine consumption can also be dehydrating. By including grass-fed butter and MCT oil into the drink, its fats can help slow the absorption rate of caffeine while simultaneously curbing hunger and sugar cravings.
MCT oil in this recipe has been shown to increase energy and boost cognition, but should only be consumed sparingly as it contains saturated fat that may raise cholesterol levels. As a general guideline, 20 g of saturated fat should not be exceeded daily – one cup of bulletproof coffee contains 14 g from MCT oil and 8 from grass-fed butter alone!
Grass-fed butter or ghee adds flavor and texture to this drink, along with a small amount of sweetener like erythritol or stevia (both keto-friendly), maple syrup or agave nectar as options; cocoa powder and cinnamon can also be added for an enhanced mocha experience.
Popular options for dairy-free coffee beverages are MCT and coconut oils combined, or high-quality fat sources like lard available at natural food stores and online. Lard can also be melted and stirred into coffee to give it an additional layer of flavor.
