Is it Healthy to Drink Coffee Before Bed?
Coffee is an ever-popular drink, from morning joe to an afternoon caffeine fix. Coffee’s caffeine content has long been recognized for stimulating alertness and focus; however, too close to bedtime it can act as a sleep disruptor causing difficulty falling or staying asleep. While caffeine helps improve focus and concentration it also interferes with our sleeping cycle preventing us from falling or staying asleep; but don’t despair, as there are ways you can still enjoy a cup of java without disturbing sleep cycles!
No matter if it’s morning coffee that gets your juices flowing or evening relaxation, caffeine can provide the extra jolt you need to get going or help unwind at the end of a long day. But there is an appropriate and inappropriate way of using caffeine – as recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, adults should not exceed 400 mg daily (the equivalent of four cups of regular coffee). Caffeine may also be present in other foods and beverages so monitoring total intake is vitally important.
For those with lower tolerance levels of caffeine, it is advised to consume it early in the day and limit consumption later in the evening. Too much caffeine may cause jitters, headaches, nervousness and anxiety – making it hard to focus on tasks. Furthermore, excessive caffeine may have negative repercussions for metabolism and release stress hormones into your system.
Consume coffee slowly throughout the day rather than all at once to allow your body to adjust and process any caffeine before it interferes with sleep. Drink it first thing in the morning to help wake you up and provide energy throughout your day.
Many factors can alter the effects of coffee, including bean type, brewing method and size of serving. Darker roasts typically pack more caffeine punch than lighter varieties; in combination with sugary sodas or energy drinks it may even increase its impact.
Individual differences in sensitivity and metabolism also come into play; some people may be extremely sensitive to the effects of coffee while others can have low enough tolerance levels that they do not experience any negative side-effects from its consumption. Keep in mind that even decaffeinated coffee may still have some impact on sleep; so make sure that you read labels before making your purchase decision.
