Coffee is one of the world’s most beloved beverages. A bitter and stimulating stimulant, coffee helps wake up our bodies with its stimulating properties. Yet many Muslims are concerned whether coffee is halal; they fear its caffeine and other chemical constituents could lead to drunkenness and therefore search for an acceptable alternative – such as Kopi Luwak civet coffee (the beans eaten by wild civets excreted into their droppings which is then collected and roasted before becoming part of luxury beverages for sale.)

Kopi Luwak coffee beans are considered halal by Muslim scholars for several reasons, including being excreted from civet stomachs in their original state without holes or damage, washed before use and are washed before consumption; all these factors make Kopi Luwak coffee suitable to consume according to Islamic teachings.

Many are still reluctant to drink civet coffee due to its source animal and are concerned that its consumption might lead to health issues in civets. However, most Muslim scholars consider civet coffee halal provided that it has been washed properly before consumption.

According to the Muslim Ulema Council (MUI), coffee beans that have not been damaged or have holes at the time they were excreted from a civet’s stomach are considered non-haram and not prohibited for consumption or production, thereby rendering Kopi Luwak halal for both consumption and production if thoroughly washed prior to processing into coffee beans or beverages.

MUI stated that food contaminated by najis is halal as long as it can be washed thoroughly and has an acceptable taste. Furthermore, they stated that any civets used to harvest luwak coffee should not experience pain or discomfort during harvesting; however this is often impossible due to limited numbers. Therefore, MUI advised consumers be wary when buying such coffee from sellers with proven track records.
